Cat Litter History: Early Forms of Litter
Tidy hasn’t always been around. Before cat litter was invented, people would put sand in kitty’s box to mimic the dirt and soil that the cat would use in the wild. Problem: The cats tracked the sand everywhere. Gross. Then in 1947, Ed Lowe started selling bags of clay (then used to soak up oil spills) marketed as “kitty litter,” and cat owners everywhere rejoiced. The clay absorbed even better than sand and stayed in the box where it belonged.
