Choosing A Cat Sitter

As much as you love the companionship and presence of your cat, sometimes taking her along is not an option and you may need a sitter to watch over her while you're away. Sitters allow you to keep her in a familiar surrounding while you're gone, rather than a kennel where your cat may be uncomfortable and unfamiliar with her environment.

When choosing a pet sitter, look for reliability. While a family member or a close friend that you trust may be the best option, this is not always possible. Often your veterinarian, groomer, or other pet- owner friends will have recommendations. Make sure your sitter has knowledge of animal health and behavior. Also, ask how long they have been sitting animals and if they have pets of their own - references from other clients are also helpful. Ask them how much time they will spend with your cat while you are away. Find out if they carry insurance or if they are bonded. Finally, introduce the sitter to your cat before you leave - have them on a play date so they can get to know each other.

As pet owner, your responsibility is to tell the sitter everything they'll need to know about your pet - including medical history, eating habits, and personality. Make sure to leave your contact number, as well as an alternate contact. Your sitter will require the phone number of your veterinarian and should ask for written authorization to take your pet to the hospital if an emergency arises. If your pet is insured, leave your policy information as well as the insurance company's telephone number.

Discuss basic emergency plans - although it will be impossible to be prepared for every possible situation, it's good to have a basic plan for your sitter.

A reliable sitter and plan will ensure your cat has the most enjoyable experience possible while you are away.
