There is nothing cuter than a kitten to warm your heart. Whether your kitten is newly born or up to six months old, there are things to take into consideration.
Like children, there are several stages in a kitten’s growth:
Kittens are entirely dependent on their mother to provide them warmth and milk. Mothers also stimulate defecation and urination. After the first week, kittens can start being held very gently. Their eyes and ears will start to open though their eyesight will be poor.
Kittens can handle a small amount of solid food. They will start playing with other kittens in their litter and walking.
This is the time for your kitten to learn how to get along with other humans, cats, dogs and other creatures they will encounter on a normal basis. Be patient and forgiving as kittens don’t know they are hurting you when they scratch or bite your hand. If they scratch you, give a high pitched yelp, training them to recognize they hurt you. Try a stuffed toy or sock they can rough house with without hurting you.
Kittens reach sexual maturity. At this point, spaying or neutering needs to be considered. From this point on, they are no longer kittens. Take pride in how much they’ve grown and developed. Make a scrapbook and look at our tips for taking a great photo of your cat.
Fleas are annoying enough to older cats. But while you can give baths or use flea powder on more developed cats, newborn kittens are delicate. Instead, try removing fleas with a comb.
If your kitten gets sick- Get professional help ASAP. Kittens are very vulnerable. If a kitten has diarrhea, make sure they are hydrated.
