Is your cat behaving badly at the litter box? Here are 5 correctable causes for litter box problems:
Territory
Some cats will not use litter used by another cat. To help correct these types of litter problems, multiple boxes are an option. Never have more than twocats per litter box.
Litter Choice
Any cat may resist a new litter if it smells or feels different, so mix in a new type of litter a little bit at a time. If your cat still doesn't changeher litter box behavior, stick with your original litter.
Dirty Litter Box
Cats are very fussy about cleanliness. To help curb your cat litter problems, remove waste daily and replace conventional litter weekly, but don't cleanthe box with ammonia. Cats have an aversion to it. Try using warm water and a mild soap, then rinsing and drying thoroughly.
Privacy
Avoid placing the litter box in a high-traffic area. Most cats, like humans, prefer privacy. To help promote good cat litter box behavior, you might also consider choosing a litter box with a hood.
Illness
Cats can't talk, but they can give you clues. One of the most common symptoms of Feline Urinary Syndrome (FLUTD) is failure to use the litter box. FLUTD is a life-threatening illness. If symptoms and litter problems persist, see your veterinarian.
